What was your “Ah ha” moment that led to turning curiosity to passion? During my schooling, I noticed there was a huge gap in available treatments for individuals with mental and/or physical disabilities in the healthcare system. I discovered there is a strong connection between mental health and physical health and was appalled these two aspects of wellness were being neglected in traditional medical practices. This is especially true within the VA healthcare system. As of 2010, 35.9% of male and female veterans who use Veterans Health Services have committed suicide. Frustrated with the system (my “Ah ha” moment) I decided I needed to be the bridge to mend this gap.

Starting my own business unites my passion for fitness and my calling to help Veterans and the general population recover from various mental and physical disabilities. Helping anyone I can to live a long and vibrant life. My mission is to bring light to the proven benefits of living a healthy lifestyle and the importance it has on our physical and mental health especially to those who have sacrificed their heart, bodies and minds to defend our freedom.

How did you discover curiosity?  I think curiosity is a natural born trait we all have, some more than others. Once you find that one problem, dilemma, issue or what have you, BOOM, there’s your curiosity.

How do you keep passionately curious? I stay passionately curious by being proactive, continually asking questions and always remembering why I do what I do. There will always be times when you hit a wall in your career or even in life in general but staying true and honest to your cause will help you stay passionately curious

What stays on your mind all day?  What stays on my mind all day is how can I improve my services to my clients. How can I challenge them and push them to get results. Also, how can I elevate my business. Which direction I want to go next. What move to make and when.

A few tips specific to your industry or passion?  A few tips specific to my industry is just to be yourself and don’t under sell what you have to offer. There are going to be people you just don’t work well with or don’t value your services at that moment. That’s ok, because there are plenty of other people who do.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them? I started my business from scratch so needless to say, everything was a challenge or at least that’s what it felt like. But the hardest part was to get my name out there. It took several months till I had people calling for my services. To overcome this, I spoke to other personal trainers. Networked everywhere I went. Did expos, sent emails, brochures and flyers out. Created business accounts on all the social media outlets. I did some free group class and events. Eventually, it all came together and now I have a steady flow of clients. Hard work does pay off!

If I had a chance to start over again, I would have: If I had a chance to start over again, I would have taken the plunge sooner. I kept putting it off for years think now’s not a good time, once I graduate college I’ll do it. I just kept making excuses.

How do you integrate passionate curiosity into life and self- care?  Fortunately, my passionate curiosity is my self-care and my career. I get to take care of myself and teach others to do so too.

What are 2 things you are really good at regarding your self-care?  I’m really good at blocking off time in my day for self-improvement. Whether that’s reading a good book, exercising, researching, crafting or learning a new skill. I know I need time to myself to be the best I can be for my family and my clients so I make it a priority.

If a microphone was given to you in a crowd of inspiring or struggling people who are looking for their curiosity, I would shout out? I would say JUST DO IT! Get out there and do it! Whatever you have been dreaming about just do it. There is no better time than the present. Take the plunge!
